Boys' Sports

Soccer

With the return of seven lettermen from last year's varsity, and some new-comers to this years varsity, the team did very well. The past season, the soccer team won five out of the ten games scheduled and tied one.
Coach Steve Zawyrucha and the boys spent many hours in drill and practice sessions which aided them in the defeat of South Huntington, Northport, and Brentwood. The Lions lost to Bay Shore, Central Islip and Amityville in league competition.
Timothy Hille, Warren Halverson, Fred Christopher, Louie Impellizeri and Fred Lenz did a noble job on the field throughout the season. Thomas Kroll, in his second year as varsity manager, was very well-appreciated by all members of the squad.
Come this Fall with many lettermen returning and with some hard work and spirit, we will be able to look foward to another successful season.

Track and Cross Country

Both Track and Cross Country were new sports to West Islip this year. Naturally, the odds were great and and all that could be expected was to build for the future. We knew that we were far
out-classed in competing with some of our opponents such as Lindenhurst, Seton Hall and Islip. But the knowledge that we improved with each meet encouraged us. Proof of this improvment was illustrated by the Varsity Track Team which had two encounters with Lindenhurst. In the first meet, we were slaughtered by Lindenhurst, 28 to 75. However, the second meet was a tight one with Lindenhurst winning by a 49 to 56 score.
By looking at the scoreboard, one might conjecture that West Islip had a poor season. However, with the outlook pointing toward more home meets in '58 and with the experience gained in '57 our teams will undoubtedly have a much more successful season. Tribute must be given to the team members for their continued hard work and high spirits in the face of very powerful opposition and continued set backs. The members of this year's novice teams were the building blocks for the future Track and Cross Country teams of West Islip.

SMITHTOWN
West Islip dominated the playing by scoring the most first downs, but couldn't coordinate its offensive. We were knocking at their door a few times, but just couldn't score. (16-0, Smithtown)

BAY SHORE
The underdog Lions held the Big Maroons to a 0-0 score at the half. High-lighted by Todd Clist's punting, the game was close all the way. Our touchdown, scored in the third quarter, was on a pass from Marquet to Sargent. (19-7, Bay Shore)

WEST BABYLON
Suffering a bad case of over-cinfidence, West Islip was soundly beaten. Outstanding for the losers were Skip Price's charges into the line. (20-7, West Babylon)

EAST ISLIP
Playing their first varsity game on the new gridiron, West Islip romped to victory. Price, Frank and Roy , scored for the Lions. (20-7, West Islip)

RIVERHEAD
Paced by the great running of All-Suffolk Harris, the Blue Waves swept over West Islip. The Lions never did get moving with the ball. (39-0, Riverhead)

SAYVILLE
Playing on a muddy field, the game was very evenly matched and had we gotten a break, we might have won. The Golden Flashes drew first blood plunging over the 2 yard line. They failed to convert the extra point. We sustained a march near the end of the 4th period when we used an aerial attack. We were finally stopped on the 15 yard line with only minutes to play. (6-0, Sayville)

PATCHOGUE
The Lions were outplayed in this contest with the Red Raiders. We continually had our backs to our own goal line. Our only touchdown came on a short pass from Todd Clist to Chuck Sargent. (20-7, Patchogue)

Basketball

Swimming Team

West Islip made a splash as it launched its first swimming team. Everything was new, the pool, the coach, and the boys. There were over forty candidates at the beginning of the season, but the team was narrowed down to twenty-nine. This year's competition was limited to Uniondale and Brentwood as West Islip was not in a regular league.      The first meet with Uniondale was a proving ground to see what West Islip could really do. Uniondale had won ten straight before encountering our Lions and although West Islip lost, 68-18, there were many close second places. West Islip's strongest swimmers were Lance Elwell, Ray Campo, Alan Elwell andDave Bradley.
The home meet with Brentwood turned out better than expected. Before a capacity crowd of over 300, West Islip's natators romped over Brentwood. West Islip took every event except the 100 yard butterfly. Lance Elwell came in first in the 50 yard freestyle event; Alan Elwell copped first in the 100 yard breaststroke. First places were also won by Ray Campo and Burt Schwartz in the 200 and 100 yard breaststroke respectively. Dave Bradley, who is one of the team's best swimmers, doubled by swimming the 100 yard backstroke and the 150 yard individual medley. Dave, a sophmore this season, is certain to be a star for West Islip within the next two years. In diving, George Vehstead, a freshman, took first place honors. George, is another boy who will do a great deal to help lead West Islip to victory in the next few years. The final score was West Islip 55, Brentwood 31.
The scores of the next two meets were almost repeats of the first encounters. In the second Uniondale meet, Lance Elwell won the 50 yard freestyle event with an impressive time of 26:8. He also went on to get a second place in the 100 yard breaststroke. Another second place was won by George Stanton in the 150 yard individual medley. A strong combination of Dennis O'Brien, Alan Elwell, Jay Losee, and Bob Millen beat Uniondale's four men for seven more points. The final score still left a lot to be desired, but it was an improvement over the first time, Uniondale 58, West Islip 28.
In the last Brentwood meet, Lance Elwell, Jay Lossee, Ray Campo and Alan Elwell all won first places in their respective events. The score of West Islip 47, Brentwood 39, would indicate a close meet, but the Lions definitely had the power.
This year's team is fortunate because only two of its swimmers,Lance and Alan Elwell, are graduating. Their swimming will be missed next year, but undoubtedly underclassmen will come to fill the gap. Lance Elwell was also the team's captain and worked closely with Mr. Brown, the coach, in helping to get West Islip's first swimming team organized. Coach Brown and the boys did an impressive job in turning a group of green swimmers into an effective, fast swimming team.

Golf

The first golf team in the history of the school climaxed a successful 1957 season by being runner-up in the Suffolk County Championship. The team, composed chiefly of sophmores and juniors, intends to repeat their fine performance this year. Captain George Stanton was one of two players who qualified in the Long Island High School Tournament.
