Student Council

The Student Council Organization did not roll into high gear until late fall. Our first concern was the procurement of G. O. tickets which enabled students to witness all athletic events at reduced prices. In conjunction with "Sports Illustrated", the G. O. sponsored the Aquacade which featured aquatic stars. A student lost and found department was established through Student Council efforts. Once a month the officers of the general organization meet with officers of neighboring schools in Western Suffolk to discuss procedures regarding sports-like behavior, appropriate dress for games, and student responsibility concerning all the various aspects of school life. Student Council is the voice of the student body working constantly to promote good will among its members.

Senior Class Officers

In September of our Senior year, we went to the polls to vote for class officers. Once again, the presidency went to Ronnie Frank who was elected for the second time; Jerry Azzara was elected vice-president; Barbara Cotumaccio was chosen secretary; Lenore Herzog won as treasurer. With the help of Mr. Nelson, our faculty advisor, our officers strove to make West Islip's first graduating class something we could all be proud of. They planned many senior functiuons; the most elaborate of all was the Senior Prom.

The Rudder

Pioneering along with our first Senior Class is our high school
publication, "The Rudder". In our sophmore year we outgrew the
mimeographed sheets which as eighth graders we had so proudly
termed "The Junior Flash". We experimented with a printed
newspaper which enabled us to use standard heads, photographs, galleys and lay-outs. As a rudder steers a ship so we trust our
newspaper will steer the policies, attitudes and destinies of
West Islip High School. As seniors we leave behind, along with
other traditions, an established newspaper, which is a member of
the Suffolk County Scholastic Press Association.

The Future Nurses Club was organized in an effort to foster an interest in nursing as a career, to acquaint students with the different types of nursing education programs and with the varied fields of service open to nurses.

The posters, Health is the Core of Life by Joseph Costa, and Health, Life, Man by Suzanne Arink won first and second prizes respectively in the art contest sponsored by the Women's Auxiliary of Suffolk County Medical Association.

We, the members of the Future Teachers, are preparing ourselves for our lives after high school. At the club meetings, we strive to understand the rich meaning of the teaching profession through interviews and discussions with faculty members. We learn the requirements, activities and programs of most of the colleges for teachers in New York State. In January we visited Adelphi College where we were guests at a seminar sponsored by A.N.T.E.P.(Adelphi New Teachers Education Program.

Library Club

All members of the Library Club work in the library two hours or more a week. They assist with the shelving of books, filing of cards, and the arranging of displays. Club members act as liaison between teachers, students and the library. At the bi-weekly meetings, library techniques, the work of librarians, and new books are discussed.

Booster Club

Boosters are interested in encouraging student spectator attendance at home and away school events. Realizing that a vehement cheering section provides its team with enthusiasm and spirit, Boosters make the necessary arrangements for transportation to all away games. Membership in Booster Club is open to all students.

Music

Music is more than techniques and skills.
It is a way of feeling and expressing and of living.
Music is a way of developing better human relationships.
