This year the Student Council has many creditable accomplishments.
With the cooperation of the Athletic Department and the work of the officers,
the Council was able to offer a G.O. card with all the advantages of last year's
card at only half the previous price. The Council, in conjunction with the Junior High
Council, sponsored two concerts featuring the Babylon Chorale. The proceeds of these concerts have been used to form the nucleus of a Student Aid Fund to help
needy students of our school.
During the football season the Council initiated a system of chartering buses
for away athletic events. Because of the popularity of this program, we were able
to provide transportation to every away football game. Popular demand fostered
the purchase of a mascot lion suit which is expected to liven up all athletic events,
and continued enthusiasm sparked the purchase of an elegant blue and gold banner
to decorate the Gymnasium.
The Council was also able to organize an effective system of chartering and
advertising clubs.
Regular projects, such as awarding pins to students having 90% averages and
donating food baskets to needy families, have been continued on a larger scale than in previous years.
The officers and representatives are proud of the Council's enrollment in the
United Schools of Western Suffolk, a group which discusses and tries to solve
common school problems.
To our patient advisor Mr. Heuttl, and Messrs. Coulter, O'Donnell, and Beck,
we are grateful for their generous cooperation and needed advice in making this
a successful year.

The Rudder

Stop the presses! The missing picture just arrived...Galley sheet number 10
has disappeared and the printer is coming any minute...What did the staff do
to the front page; the flag looks squashed...This time the paper looks a lot
better--Page 1 has an interesting layout...
The Rudder has functioned as a high school paper for four years. Most of
our problems and successes this year ran parallel to previous ones; however
the staff of 1959-60 instituted several changes.
More profit-raising events (We remember "The Long Gray Line", the
concession stands, and the Spring play "Kind Lady".) helped the treasury this
term. Faced with the possibility of only six issues, the staff was determined to
earn money for an extra issue, and we did achieve this end through much hard
work and cooperation.
Experimenting with a new idea, The Rudder reduced the the flag on the front
page for more news space and a better looking page. Mixed attitudes met the
change, but eventually the different front page format was accepted with pleasing
comments. The Editorial Board of The Rudder believes that experimentation
is the key to forward movement towards a continually improving high school paper.
(We only hold our breath and say a little prayer each time "something new" is tried.)
The presses roll each year and as graduating staff members vacate their
positions, upcoming reporters and editors turn out an improved finished product...
and as each year merges into another, The Rudder becomes firmly imbeded in
the life of West Islip High School.

Majorettes

This twirling group led by Ginny Taylor adds to the color and performance
of our marching band. The girls began taking twirling lessons in elementary
school with Mr. Sanford Rague coaching them. The new members added to their
numbers and increased the variety of skills. In the pouring rain of football
weather and in the scorching sun of beach dedications the twirlers blend their
talents with those of their fellow students.

Senior Band

Each school year the Senior Band makes its first formal appearance at home
football games. In December, playing the traditional holiday songs and carols,
the band presents its annual Christmas Concert. In April, the band again offers
concert music fo the much appreciated Spring Festival. However, in May the band
is on the march again for the Memorial Day Parade. Led by the high-stepping
twirlers, the band marches down Higbie Lane, a proud, colorful group in West Islip blue and gold.

Now in its second year, the West Islip Chapter has endeavored to uphold the high standards of character, leadership and service. Our enrollment has increased to thirty-six as a result of the induction of nineteen new members. A special event was the rendered for our guests, three foreign exchange students. Informally meeting and conversing with a teenager from New Zealand, a lad from Denmark and a Miss from Norway was an enjoyable and new experience.

Mathletes

The Mathletes, composed of students interested in mathmatics, was organized for the first time this year. The "team" members attend practice sessions weekly in preperation for the inter-school meets held five times a year at the different member schools. Twenty-five schools of Suffolk County participate in these meets which consist of difficult, but enterprising mathmatical puzzles. Each contestant answering a question correctly within the allotted time receives a point for his school and for himself. At the end of the school year, prizes are awarded to the winning schools and to the highest individual scorers.

Aquatics

"Get in and warm up" is the familiar cry on Thursday afternoons when the Aquatic Club members meet. Practice, they know, is the chief ingredient for skillful diving and for expert, fast swimming. Thus the members practice diligently in order to make West Islip's Second Aquacade as successful as the initial show in '59 which was such a notable performance that Coach Brown took the show on the road. At the Southward Ho and Centereach Country Clubs the show was enthusiastically received. This year's stars are expecting to play to two full house audiences in our own pool. With a clown quarter, fancy diving, speed swimming, a coordinated club routine and individual feats, the members are busy practicing their routines.

Art Squad

Rush! Rush! Rush! No one can mistake activity for achievement in the art area. Constantly, last minute posters, signs, displays and showcase decorations make it necessary for these art students to draw, staple, paste, cut-out, cement and spell. Working together attains a high pitch as these artists become aware of the many facets of high school publicity.

Atomic Energy Club

Rifle Club

Every Tuesday afternoon during February and March, 26 student sharp-shooters gathered in the Rifle Range for practice. Since this was an initial season for this activity, Coach Cesareo stressed safety measures as the club members learned how to skillfully handle their rifles. Although there were a few crack shots, most students performed in an average fashion. The high scorer for our first season was Cassie McManus.

Future Nurses

The Future Nurses enjoyed a varied program which included a film entitled "When You Chose Nursing", An open house program at Mary Immaculate Hospital; a birthday party for a handicapped child who is unable to attend school and an explanation of the nursing curriculum at Plattsburg by Miss Bemmberneck, a Plattsburg graduate. A special joy we shared was the monthly provision of spending money for a boy and for a girl who is a member of the adolescent unit of Central Islip State Hospital.

Boys' Leaders Club

Appearing in new uniforms, the leaders have been on deck daily assisting the faculty members of the Athletic Department. In addition to being actively engaged in the swimming championships, in the Scholarship Fund Basketball Game and the regular collection of tickets at home games, the leaders have aided in the formation of the first West Islip Lacrosse team.
The third annual Leaders Club Dance--jointly sponsored by the Girls' and Boys' Leaders Clubs was successfully held on December 19, 1959. In keeping with the season's spirit of giving, each couple brought a small gift to be given to a child at Good Samaritan Hospital.

Girls' Leaders Club

Girls' Leaders Club is one of the most active clubs in the school. New Members are inducted at a formal tea after they have been chosen by their teachers on the basis of ability, interest, cooperation, personality and leadership. In addition to their assigned duties in the pool and gymnasium areas, the Leaders sell refreshments at athletic events and check coats at school functions. The profits from the Christmas Dance were used to purchase blue uniforms which have the word Leader inscribed in bold block letters across the back. The members of this club can be proud of their overall record, particularly their performances in Demonstration Night. Their unselfish services contribute to the everyday life at school.

Orchestra

The Senior High Orchestra under the direction of Mr. Sanford Rague is particularly proud of its A rating in the state competition at Babylon. The orchestra, which takes part in all school musical programs, also gives demonstrations to the elementary school children in order that they may enjoy and appreciate music in their tender years. Two senior members of the orchestra, Barbara Ruggiero and Ann Worman who plan to major in music at Fredonia State Teachers College, began their musical careers in the primary grades.

This singing group, which received a grade B rating at the All Area Competition at Babylon last year, is hoping for an A rating in May. Barbara Ruggiero, the featured soloist, also plays the viola in the orchrstra.

Dramatics

During this school year 1959-1960, the Drama Club was firmly established at West Islip High. Under the direction of Mr. Charles Plumer, a strong foundation was laid for the dramatics program at our school. The basic yearly program will consist of two full-length plays for public presentation; two short plays to be presented to the school body at an assembly program each semester; participation in the Shakespeare Festival at Hofstra College; and various field trips to attend community and school productions on the Island.
Through working together with other members, each member of the club has fully enjoyed himself whether he was being smeared with grease paint, rehearsing on stage, or constructing scenery in the "catacombs". As a part of the program, special workshops are conducted by Mr. Plumer in directing, make-up and scenery design and construction.
The fun and experience of producing "Jenny Kissed Me" (with the class 0f '60), "Kind Lady", "In the Suds" and "Little Prison"; the enjoyment of seeing "Romeo and Juliet" at Hofstra; "Damn Yankees; at Northport High; and "Oklahoma" and "Wonderful Town" at Sayville will surely stand forever in the minds of the members of the West Islip High School Drama Club.

Future Teachers

The Future Teachers Of America was organized to help students learn about their chosen field. The members hope to accomplish their goal by inviting speakers to their meetings, observing classes in action, visiting colleges offering teacher training, and corresponding with graduates who are studying to become teachers. Presiding over the organization was Susan Gerber; Vice-President was Nancy Newton; Corresponding Secretary, Marie Dudenhausen; Recording Secretary, Barbara Hakiel; Treasurer, Pat Seyfert; and Historian, Priscilla Brown.

Fok's'l

Fok's'l staff members have a double purpose. As we try to supply the students' school needs, we learn the problems of storekeeping. The confusion of taking inventories, the fun of changing window displays, the mechanics of keeping a cash register and the gossip sessions are all included in our work. Mr. DuBois, our faculty advisor and overseer, was extremely patient with our inexperience and very understanding of our problems.

Political Discussion Club

In December, Mr. Patterson and thirteen members of the Senior Class met for the first meeting of the Political Discussion Club. At this gathering, a constitution was adopted and plans for future meetings were discussed. As the constitution of the club provides for a rotating chairman, a different senior charter member presides each thursday in room 204. The topics of some of the meetings were: "Is Capitalism Passe?", "Is Too Much Democracy Undemocratic?", "Materialism vs Idealism". Other meetings were devoted to speakers from Republican and Democratic Parties who spoke on their respective party's national policies. In March, the club with a few senior American History students attended a mock political convention at Port Jefferson where they took part in nominating a presidential candidate.

Girls' Sextette

The Girls' Sextette which was organized last year has been steadily improving under Mr. George Beliles' direction. This year, the girls sang for the West Islip Lions' Club, some music assemblies in the Junior and Senior High Schools and at some grade school functions. This year, the Sextette will go to the N.Y.S.S.M.A. competition where the song-birds hope to receive an A rating.

Radio Club

Pictured is the Radio Club which was formed to aid and instruct those students interested in the theory and mechanics of electronics.
Members of the club from left to right are:
Abba Weinstein, Sal Lo Cascio, Fred Salazar, Robert Farquharson, Mr. Millard, Joseph Whittle, Raoul Hurwitz, Frank Perrini, John Norwood.

Cheerleaders

Dance Band

The Dance Band is composed of fourteen fellows who like to make the change from classical music to that of "EndsVille", better known as jazz. At the Tuesday and Wednesday sessions, we play such tunes as "I'll Be Around", "Undecided", and "I'll Remember April". The Dance Band plays for school dances, visiting school functions and provides the musical opportunity for whoever is interested in music to forget his problems of school work, and to relax in a light-hearted, sweet-rhythm manner.

Pep Band

The Pep Band, sponsored by Mr. Paserb's "Pep Pills", has become a regular feature at home basketball games. The band is there to help root for the team and to entertain the spectators. Rehearsals occur before each game to brighten up the competitive atmosphere.
Fred Salazar, our versatile trumpet and cornet player, was a three year competitor in N.Y.S.S.M.A.
